One of the things I always tell our couples when we are planning their engagement session, is to incorporate something you love. And a lot of the times, their dog is that something special! And if your a dog mom like me, then of course you want your fur baby in your photos!

What I have realized over the last 5 years of doing this, is that sometimes dogs can be kind of weird in front of the camera. And this is a common concern. You're worried that your pup is too hyper, doesn’t listen, or gets distracted easily. And while some of those things may be true, I’m here to tell you not all hope is lost! You can still get super cute and fun photos with your pup, even if they are a little crazy! haha

Here are my 7 tips on included your pup in your engagement session!

1. Don’t Expect Perfection

If you’re going somewhere your dog has never been before, give them time to smell all the things, and get used to his environment. Most likely they will be very excited, so make sure your being patient with them. I will defiantly try my best to get your pup looking at the camera, but if it doesnt happen, THATS OK! We will make sure to get a lot pf photos with you playing and loving your fur babe! However, its easier than you think for me to get them to look at me, which bring me to my 2nd tip!

TIP FROM A BRIDE: “Manage your expectations lol we had our Dalmatian pup that had just turned 1 year old. He was a lot more interested in exploring a new place than listening to us. But Veronica did amazing and one of our favorite shots”

2. Bring Help

Most likely your dog won’t be in every single photo. So bring a family member or friend to take care of them while you two are having your photos taken. Having another person to help get their attention for photos can also be very helpful!

TIP FROM A BRIDE: “We had my mom bring the dogs so we could do a few shots with them but not be obligated to watch them the whole time. We also walked our dogs a ton before so they could behave lol”

3. Bring Treats and Toys

It’s important to know if your dog is treat or toy motivated. And just think of this a fun reward session for them! I’ll squeak a toy or hold a treat over my camera, and it almost always works to get their attention.

4. Start or finish the session with your Pup

You’ll probably only have about 10-15 mins of solid attention from your dog. So I always have our couples start out their session with their dog, or wrap it up with them.

5. Accessorize

A super cute bandana or bow tie can add a special touch! But make sure that their accessories dont clash with their collar, leash or even your outfits! When you coordinating your outfits for you and your fiancé, dont forget about your pup!

6. Don’t Groom your Dog the day Before

This might depend on the type of breed you have. But after a fresh bath and haircut, your dog will shed for the next 24 hours. The last thing you want is to have hair all over your colors in your photos! I recommend grooming at least 3 days before your session. If you have a breed of dog that sheds no matter what (like we do haha), bring a lint roller! ;)

7. Bring poop bags

Its always better to be safe then sorry. Make sure to have some poop bags incase your dogs has to potty!
